Wenhai Lake is a sub-alpine lake within the Lashihai Nature Reserve, located at some 3100metres altitude, southeast of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and surrounded by mountains and rustic minority villages. It is best known for being a habitat for migrating birds overwintering from Siberia. The surrounding forests contain a rich biodiversity of plant and animal species, including protected raptors, traditional medicinal plants, wild fungi and alpine flowers, most notably rhododendrons of over 15 species, which burst into bloom between the months of June and September.
