The 2 day High Trail trek of the Tiger Leaping Gorge is easily considered one of the best treks in China. Not for the unfit, the hiking trail runs along the base of the Haba Peak providing spectacular views of 7,000 foot cliffs yielding to the jagged pinnacles of Jade Dragon Mountain that rise another mile above them. Along the way, you’ll pass varied scenery and landscape, from waterfalls, to a temple, villages and rice terraces that lie directly beside the gorge.
Leave at 8:30am, we will take about 1 hour to reach historic Stone Drum (Shigu) Town, where we will visit The Long March of Red Army Monument, old chain bridge and the First Bend of the Yangtze River.
Then we will drive for about another 1.5 hours to reach Qiaotou (Hutiaoxia Town), where we will stop to buy tickets before driving for another 15mins into the gorge to start the High Trail hike. The hike passes through the infamous 28 bends and Naxi Family Guesthouse before we reach Tea Horse Guesthouse to stay overnight. Total of about 5-6 hours of trekking.
After breakfast, we leave at 8:30am, trekking along the high trail for 1-1.5hours to Halfway Guesthouse where we will have a rest and to enjoy the stunning view from the terrace. Continue hiking about 2 hours down to the road; along the way, we will have panoramic views of the spectacular gorge and pass three waterfalls. We will have a lunch before continuing the hike down to Middle Gorge, this time descending almost a kilometre to the bottom of the gorge to enjoy the surging waters of the Yangtze as it squeezes its way through the narrow gorge.
After hiking another 2 hours, passing through "Yixiantian", a narrow section of the gorge where the water appears to connect with the sky in a straight line, we will reach Walnut Garden Village where our driver will pick us up, driving 2-2.5hours back to Lijiang or onwards to Shangri-la.
